What a week!

This week has been my biggest weekly weight loss ever - the only problem is, I’m not sure what I did to achieve it!

I ran, I watched what I ate, I drank heaps of water, etc. All the usual stuff that I normally do. One possible difference is that there were no ‘days off-diet’ this week. Normally I have a meal or two each week that’s a bit of a blow-out, such as a roast dinner at the in-laws or a lunch with workmates. I don’t go overboard, but they’re not exactly calorie-restricted meals, either. This week I had none of those.

Maybe I need to try doing that more often :-).

With the two big weekends (wedding and holiday) now behind me, the weight is starting to drop off again. It feels great to be back down below 90 kg on my daily weigh-ins!

A slight weight gain this week. Hmm. I was expecting that, though, with the wedding last weekend and a group holiday with a bunch of other families this weekend.

I found it very easy to slip back into weight-loss-mode after each weekend, though. A couple more 10km runs and I’ll be losing weight again :-).

Another great week for running and weight loss!

The big news of the week is that I fitted into my suit for the wedding, and had a great time. I enjoyed a lot of great food, so you might notice a little ‘blip’ on next week’s weight graph :-).

With my new-found focus on health, I’ve really made some good progress this week. It’s like making that decision up-front, that health is my number 1 priority, made all the small decisions through the week so much simpler.

Should I watch TV or go for a run? Should I surf the web or go for a run? Should I eat that donut? Should I have a second helping of dinner? What should I order for lunch?

All very easy decisions, when made from the perspective that health is the most important thing right now.

And the results can’t be denied - 0.85 kg lost in a week! I’m very motivated to keep that up for the next few months! It’s very satisfying to see the average line in the above 5-week graph tipping over - hopefully it’ll be sloping down to the right by next Sunday.

I did three 5 km runs this week, and each time was able to finish without walking. I’m doing the 5 km in under 29 minutes - not bad, but I am hoping to improve over time. I also did a 7 km run with a few walking breaks, and a 3 km run (I was feeling lazy that night!).

I’m going to do a run at work at lunchtime on Thursday. There are a bunch of people from around the area I work who meet at the university for a 4.2 km run each Thursday. The organiser maintains records of everybody’s times and assigns handicaps. The starts are then staggered so that everyone finishes more-or-less around the same time. It sounds fun and is very informal, so it should be interesting.

For the first Thursday run I’ll be tagging along with a friend who’ll show me the course. He does the 4.2 km in around 25 minutes - I’ve timed myself the last few nights and I’m about a minute faster than that, but this will be in the midday sun so hopefully I’ll be able to keep up!

I’m planning to build up my run lengths by 0.5 km every few weeks, so that eventually I’ll reach my goal of running 10 km. I’ve also set a goal time for the 10 km run - 1 hour. That’s an average pace of 6 minutes per km, which I think should be quite achievable.

Weight loss chart for 28 January 2007 All time weight loss chart up to 28 January 2007

So, I’m back. And as you can see, I had a blow-out over Christmas! Although, to be fair, about 2 kg of the weight gain is due to using my new (and presumably more accurate!) digital scales.

Still, a few kilos of weight gain is not going to be a major problem. I’ve shifted many times that so far - I know what it takes, and I know how to do it.

I’ve got a little extra short-term motivation, too. A good friend is getting married on February 9th, so I tried on one of my old suits last week. I haven’t been able to wear this suit for 5 years or more, but it now fits (albeit rather tightly around the waist!). I figure if I can lose a couple of kilos over the next two weeks, I should be able to wear those pants comfortably. Let’s see what happens…

In other news, I’ve started jogging at night time. Mornings have been too inconsistent, with G waking up early some days and sleeping in others, and the weather, and tiredness, and a bunch of other pathetic excuses. I also had to give the jogging pram back to its owners, which means I can only walk when I take G out now.

So I’m jogging at night. Usually I go out at about 8 pm, after the kids are all asleep. My wife usually puts on some girly TV show and does a session on the exercise bike, so it’s a good time to get out for a run.

After all the excesses of Christmas and my lack of running lately, I was surprised to find that I can still run 3 km without walking, and I’m still doing it in around 16 minutes. I don’t know why my fitness hasn’t gone backwards, but I’m really pleased!

My usual run is now 7 km (doing 4 minutes running/1 minute walking), which takes me around 45 minutes. If I’m feeling lazy, I can just do a 16-minute 3 km run. I never thought running 3 km would become my ‘lazy’ option! A long run takes up a 1-hour block of time (adding in getting changed and showering), whereas a short run only takes half an hour. Looked at that way, it’s not so hard to fit a run into my usual night-time routine, especially a short one.

I’ll try to post some more stuff soon!

Weight loss chart for 19 November 2006 All time weight loss up to 19 November 2006

The weight loss and exercise is back on track now. I’m losing small but steady amounts every week, and I’ve been able to start walking and jogging again. My nagging knee injury from the past few weeks seems to be gone, although I’m still taking it fairly easy.

Next week should be interesting. I’m having my four wisdom teeth removed on Tuesday. I guess I won’t be eating much for a few days after that, but I’m pretty sure I won’t be doing much exercise either!

Good to see the weight going in the right direction this week! That wipes out last week’s gain, but I’d like to push through to below 90 kg in the week ahead.

I had a sore knee last weekend, which prevented me from running most of this week. It felt a lot better by Friday, so I went for another run. That made it hurt again. I think I strained something. It felt a lot better after a couple of days, but I’m going to take it easy all this week and make sure it heals properly. I’ll probably just use the exercise bike, keeping my sessions relatively short and making sure there’s no impact on the knee.

I’m going into hospital in about 3 weeks to have my four impacted wisdom teeth out. All this getting fit stuff has gotten me motivated to get other aspects of my health under control, and my wisdom teeth really should have been fixed years ago. Apparently I’m not going to be able to eat very much for a few days afterwards, so hopefully that’ll help shift some weight too :-).
